about root canal therapy
When detected early on, tooth decay can be addressed with a standard filling or something similar to remove the decay and close off the affected area. But when the decay expands beyond the outer tooth and affects the inner portion of the tooth, you will need a root canal. Also known as endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Patrick Yoshikane, D.D.S. removes the infected pulp from the tooth, cleans the cavity, and then fills and seals the tooth. Dr. Patrick Yoshikane may recommend a root canal to Orange, CA patients because it treats the infection and keeps the decay from spreading to other teeth (and creating larger problems).
If you suspect you could benefit from root canal therapy, we understand if you might have reservations about having this procedure. Though root canals are a common dental treatment, patients often put off going to the dentist to address tooth pain because of dental anxiety. Dr. Yoshikane and his staff will do their very best to make sure you are at ease and comfortable, but we also provide several methods of sedation for any fear and anxiety. Call Patrick Yoshikane, D.D.S. to schedule a consult with Dr. Yoshikane for more information on sedation dentistry and root canals.

"Another save by Dr.Y and his staff. I had previously gone in for a toothache and he suggested that I needed a root canal. His staff got me in so fast because I was in so much pain. The office is always so accommodating and so nice. Dr.Y always makes sure his patients have a full understanding of what is going on. One thing I like is that I am so scared of needles and dental work (lol) and he makes it so I don't even feel the slightest pinch. Forever grateful"- L.H. / Yelp / Mar 22, 2020
"I’ve been a patient of Dr. Yoshikane’s for two years. From the beginning the front office staff has been warm and welcoming towards me. He is very accommodating and will fit me into his schedule if I have any discomfort. The hygienists in the office are also very friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve had some root canals and an implant done during this time and the process was smooth and not painful. The procedures were clearly explained by Dr. Y. I would highly recommend his practice for your dental needs. :)"- C.G. / Yelp / Jun 05, 2020
"I’ve been going to Dr. Yoshikane for over 4 years now and he’s hands down the best dentist I’ve worked with so far! He’s transparent, informative, friendly, and thoughtful through each consultation and treatments. I recently had an infection in my root canal (done by a previous dentist) and Dr. Yoshikane was very thorough in explaining every step of the treatment and procedure. Infection is gone and no more pain!! A big THANK YOU to Dr and his team for making each visit so pleasant!"- K.K. / Yelp / Aug 23, 2022
"Dr. Yoshikane is amazing! I went in Friday morning to my dentist in south Orange County and found out that I needed a root canal. Since my general dentist does not do them. I was referred out to an endodontist who was very pushy and way overpriced. I called my husband in tears and he reached out to Dr. Yoshikane who totally took care of me. First of all it was Friday his day off and he said how quick can you get to my office. I went straight in. The office staff was warm and kind and did everything they could to help me be comfortable. Even when Dr. Yoshikane gave me shots to numb me I could barely feel it. I was in and out within 40 minutes. His service , dedication, perfectionism and commitment was amazing. He even reached out to me over the weekend to make sure I was doing okay. I would highly recommend him to any friends and family."- S.H. / Yelp / Oct 14, 2019
An infection that reaches the pulp of your tooth can be the result of a deep crack or cavity in the tooth or a physical injury. Some of the most common signs that you may have an infected tooth are tooth pain, jaw pain, swollen and discolored gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth. If the infected pulp is not removed, it will become increasingly painful as the infection spreads to other parts of your mouth. Set up an appointment at Patrick Yoshikane, D.D.S. as soon as you feel or see any changes in your mouth. If you have anxieties or reservations about going to the dentist, don't hesitate to ask us about sedation dentistry to help you remain calm and at ease during your exam and treatment.
What To Expect
Prior to the treatment, you can discuss your anesthetic/sedation options with Dr. Yoshikane. We do not want you to feel fearful, anxious or on-edge during your appointment. Many individuals request oral-conscious sedation to get them through a root canal. Dr. Yoshikane is very understanding of dental anxieties and will try to help you make the appropriate decision on how to proceed.
To perform an endodontic procedure, Dr. Yoshikane will examine the innermost part of your tooth and then carefully remove the infected pulp. From there, the inner chamber will be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate remaining debris. Once it is cleaned, the tooth is filled with a dental filler to seal and protect it from further decay.
Based on the method of sedation that was chosen, you might need to have an adult drive you home following your procedure. You should expect your mouth to feel tender or swollen, but this should not last more than a few days and can be reduced with anti-inflammatory medications. At your follow-up appointment, Dr. Yoshikane will examine the area to see that the infection is gone and that there is no cause for concern. Afterward, you should continue to schedule yearly dental check-ups and twice-yearly dental cleanings to maintain your oral health.
Based on your dental insurance coverage, some of your costs may be paid. After talking to your insurance company, we can better calculate your out-of-pocket costs. At your consult, the team of Dr.Yoshikane can go over payment methods, along with financing, to help make your procedure affordable.
