About tooth extractions

Even though Dr. Patrick Yoshikane makes every attempt to save and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances in which a tooth or teeth might have to be taken out. A simple extraction is the removal of a tooth that's visible over the gums. This is typically done for a tooth that's decayed or damaged and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that hasn't erupted over the gums. Surgical extractions are frequently performed to take out impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that don't have sufficient space to fit into your mouth. Whatever the reason for needing an extraction, at Patrick Yoshikane, D.D.S., our team will give you the best possible treatment. Our Orange, CA office provides multiple sedation methods, such as anxiety management medications or oral-conscious sedation, to help you remain calm and comfortable throughout your treatment. Best Candidates

If your tooth was damaged or broken because of decay, Dr. Yoshikane may make attempts to fix it using bonding, a filling, or a crown. However, a tooth might be too decayed and may need to be removed to prevent the decay from spreading — and also to preserve the health of the remaining teeth. You may also require a dental extraction to remove a tooth or teeth that cannot fit in your mouth. This involves your third molars, popularly called wisdom teeth, which grow around age 17 – 21. In older kids, infant teeth that haven't naturally fallen out might have to be extracted so that they do not obstruct the permanent teeth. If you're beginning orthodontic treatment or contemplating Invisalign, then you might require a tooth extraction to make space for the remaining teeth as they move into their new position.

What To Expect

Dental extractions are performed in our office using local anesthesia on the area near the tooth being removed. Different forms of sedation may be used based on the degree of the extraction and also to help you remain relaxed in case you have dental phobias. Once you're prepared, Dr. Yoshikane will start the procedure. For a simple extraction, Dr. Yoshikane will loosen up the tooth using a special device called an elevator prior to removal. A surgical extraction entails making incisions in your gums to remove the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be separated into smaller pieces so that it can be taken out. When the tooth has been removed, Dr. Yoshikane will close the incision in your gums. Dr. Yoshikane may write a prescription for antibiotics to be taken prior to and following your treatment in case you are experiencing illness, your immune system is compromised, the process is complicated, or you have special health concerns.

Recovery

Based upon the anesthesia used during your extraction, you may need to have a responsible adult take you home. As your gums heal, you need to avoid spitting, smoking, and using straws. Your recovery will vary, depending on the complexity of your extraction; however, many patients prefer to eat soft, room-temperature food for at least a couple of days following the procedure. Dr. Yoshikane will speak with you about what to expect during your recovery, as well as how to care for your gums. Your gums will probably be inflamed after the procedure; therefore, Dr. Yoshikane suggests over-the-counter pain medicine and cold compresses. Sometimes, Dr. Yoshikane provides prescriptions for pain medicine and/or antibiotics. In addition to some proposed follow-up visits, you should schedule regular appointments at Patrick Yoshikane, D.D.S. for dental exams and cleanings so our team can track your oral health following an extraction.

anticipated costs

Extractions are generally covered by dental insurance, but your sedation options may not be. Prior to your extraction, we'll call your insurance company to determine your particular policy and estimate your expenses. If you do not have dental insurance, then Dr. Yoshikane can speak with you about your payment options and provide information about low-interest dental financing.
